Itsukishima shrine (Miyajima)
With its unique and daring layout where its premises extends out into the ocean, and its architectural beauty based on the most refined "shindenzukuri" style of the Heian period, Itsukushima shrine is one of the most prominent shrines of Japan. Its shrine pavilions are connected by bright red colored corridors and appear to be floating on the ocean during high tide. The contrast between the green foliage of Mt. Misen in the background, and the blue waters of the Seto sea create an amazing scene which evokes images of Ryugujo (a mythical undersea palace).
